Diarrhea Medications
• Kaopectate. Take 25 to 50 mL (2 to 4 tbsp.) after each loose bowel movement.
• Diphenoxylate. One to two tablets every four hours as needed. You can take with Kaopectate or loperamide.
Maximum eight tablets per day.
• Loperamide. Two capsules initially, then one to two capsules every two to four hours. Maximum 16 capsules
per day.
• Cholestyramine. A bile-salt sequestering agent. One packet after each meal and at bedtime.
• Donnatal or psyllium. Anticholinergic, antispasmodic agents for bowel cramping. One to two tablets every
four hours as needed.
• When all else fails, try psyllium plus Kaopectate.
